ACHILLES WELL IN PETRA LESVOS WAS AN ANCIENT PORT |
From Petra village nearby as you climb up before the village
Petri, there is a rocky hill where at the base below that hill is
known as the "Achilles well" because the great hero anchored his
ships there. The area is called "Achilleiophigada=Achilles well" (Αχιλλιοπηγάδα by the locals). Witnessing remains today ruin walls, mooring stones, carved holes to hold rings to tie ships, and the path approaching that little harbor one can notice the smoothness of the busy path of the rocks. [Homers Iliad: according to Homers epic, Lesvos was under the Trojan influence, Achilles invited Lesvos and looted the island]. |

For the last 3 thousand or more years land slides from the above
mountain covered and moved the sea farther in, the rock (petra=πέτρα was surrounded by the sea). ![]() |
