ACHILLES WELL IN PETRA LESVOS WAS AN ANCIENT PORT

From Petra village nearby as you climb up before the village Petri, there is a rocky hill where at the base below that hill is known as the "Achilles well" because the great hero anchored his ships there.
The area is called "Achilleiophigada=Achilles well" (ΑχιλλιοπηγÜδα by the locals).

Witnessing remains today ruin walls, mooring stones, carved holes to hold rings to tie ships, and the path approaching that little harbor one can notice the smoothness of the busy path of the rocks.

[Homers Iliad: according to Homers epic, Lesvos was under the Trojan influence, Achilles invited Lesvos and looted the island].
(read the story below)

possible mooring stones they used to tie ships on

an ancient anchor

For the last 3 thousand or more years land slides from the above mountain covered and moved the sea farther in, the rock (petra=πÝτρα was surrounded by the sea).

ruins of a number of storage rooms, exist today on this abandoned area

as we can see the sea level is not great from Achilles well

walls and lots of stone ruins give evidence of activity of the past

the difference of the two photos the smooth path and the nearby rough surrounding area proofing the busy port.

The rocks are smooth proving the busy path from the past (now days the path is unused)
